Michigan Natural Gas Utilities

In October 2000 legislation was passed by the Michigan Public Service Commission (PSC) to allow the unbundling of services (Deregulation) that allow residential and commercial Natural Gas customers to have a “Choice” of their own supplier.  In 2009 there were four natural gas utilities, listed above, participating in the program. 

Your natural gas bill is made up of four parts;
1) Gas Commodity Charge: Price of gas paid to Utility or AGS (Alternative Gas Supplier).  Price and cost of gas based on quantity used obtained from your home meter.
2) Delivery Charge: Based on amount of gas used and regulated by MPSC
3) Customer Charge: Fixed monthly charge and regulated by MPSC
4) Sales Tax: Currently 4% for residential customers and 6% for business customers.

Your utility will still deliver your gas as always for the same fee, but the cost of your natural gas itself is now up to you.
